Scenes from Ashton Carters trip to Afghanistan

Dec 9 2:57pm Babbage
THE scene at NATO headquarters in Kabul on December 9th was enough to give President-elect Donald Trump a fit. In a dusty walled garden surrounded by high walls and watchtowers, American officers and civilians huddled in a blue-painted gazebo with a group of young Afghan girl scouts, making bracelets.Mr Trump has to yet sketch out an Afghan policy in more than the broadest of strokes, but has made it clear what he dislikes. At rallies during the election campaign and in a speech just this week in North Carolina, he promised cheering supporters that he would put an end to nation-building overseas and start spending money on roads, bridges and American airports that are, he grumbles, “horrible, like Third World countries.” Mr Trump, a skilful story-teller, has a tale to tell about why the most powerful country on earth has been fighting terrorism from Afghanistan to Iraq and beyond for 15 years, without seeming to win. His story involves naïve, chump-like leaders who foolishly toppled foreign autocrats—“foreign regimes that we know nothing about, that we shouldn’t be involved with,” as he puts it—instead of applying brutal, unsqueamish violence to the single task...Continue reading...

How driver mode for phones will affect those who work behind the wheel

Nov 29 11:44am Babbage
FOR business travellers moving between cities, there’s no better place to get work done than the train. But for travellers in America, going by rail is generally not an option outside of the transit corridor from Washington, DC to Boston. And so people covering ground for business are often forced to make do with cars, and with whatever they can work they can manage behind the wheel—which usually means making a lot of phone calls. That could soon change. Just as airplane mode has restricted travellers from using cellular networks while in the skies, “driver mode” may soon severely limit communications on the road.Last week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration called for makers of mobile phones and similar devices to include a driver mode on those products that will prevent drivers from making calls, sending texts and checking social media. Under these guidelines, all applications other than music and navigation could be locked for drivers.“Distraction is still a problem,” the transportation secretary, Anthony Foxx,...

Kaija Saariaho, operas prima donna

Nov 29 10:38am Babbage
KAIJA SAARIAHO’S artistic genesis was inauspicious. Born to a metal worker and home-maker, she received no musical encouragement from her parents. As a child, she composed secretly in her bedroom; aged 11, she read about Mozart and concluded that she was destined for inadequacy. She was the only female composition student in her class at the Sibelius Academy in the early 1970s; professors told her that pretty girls shouldn’t write music. She was advised by a teacher to repeat “I can do it” in the mirror several times a day.Thankfully, she persevered, and her eclectic training has helped to shape her trajectory as a composer. Ms Saariaho is now regarded as one of the most successful of her generation, admired for her luminous, brilliantly crafted orchestral scores and thoughtful stage pieces. In December, the Metropolitan Opera presents her “L’Amour de Loin” (“Love from Afar”): the first work by a female composer shown at the house since 1903. The themes of love and death in “L’Amour” are, on the surface,...Continue reading...

Why Britains Chinese community has long punched below its weight

Nov 29 1:06am Babbage
THE Chinese in Britain are known as the silent minority. They have generally kept their heads down, worked hard and avoided politics. They have also been known as the model minority. Chinese children have always done well in British schools (as they have in other countries). The lack of any major religious or cultural clashes has meant there have been few flare-ups. Yet while there are about two dozen South Asian members of Parliament, and half as many black MPs, it was not until 2015 that the first ethnic Chinese MP, Alan Mak, was elected. Of 18,000 local councillors around the country, only perhaps a dozen are ethnically Chinese, says Alex Yip, a councillor in Birmingham. Why is this? The lower visibility of Chinese people in Britain is partly because of numbers. The 2011 census counted 430,000 Chinese people in Britain (though some community workers say the number could be as much as 600,000). There are officially nearly 1.5m of Indian descent and 1.2m of Pakistani heritage, though probably more of each. Because they are relatively dispersed, Chinese people are better integrated than many minorities. But their high educational achievements have not translated into better...Continue reading...

What is the alt-right?

Sep 26 12:36am Babbage
UNTIL August this year, the alt- (short for alternative) right did not matter much. Two things happened to change that. First, Donald Trump appointed Steve Bannon, a former executive-chairman of Breitbart, as CEO of his campaign. Breitbart is a website that has published stories praising the alt-right. Then Hillary Clinton gave a speech in Reno, Nevada, in which she denounced Mr Trump for bringing the alt-right and its admirers into the mainstream of American politics. Many hundreds of thousands of Google searches followed. People claiming to speak for the al-right were delighted by the attention. What is this alt-right thing? And why does it matter, if indeed it does?Right-wing thinking in America is tremendously varied. The considered conservatism of the National Review has nothing in common with sites that set out to provoke like Breitbart. But many thinkers and writers who position themselves on the right of the political spectrum share a view: that other people on the right have betrayed their principles. There are, therefore, quite a lot of people with vastly different ideas who could plausibly claim the mantle of the alternative right. These include...Continue reading...

Jeremy Corbyn is re-elected with an increased mandate

Sep 24 8:15am Babbage
OWEN SMITH was never the front-runner in Labour’s leadership contest. But moderates in the party hoped that he would at least begin the process of clipping away at the mighty mandate, 59\% of vote, that accrued to Jeremy Corbyn last year. Perhaps this could be shaved to nearer 50\%. And perhaps, in one of the three voter categories—full members, registered supporters and affiliates (mostly union members)—he could even be beaten. After all, the last twelve months have seen Labour wade progressively farther into a moral and electoral swamp. Mr Corbyn was a dismally poor cheerleader for Britain’s continued EU membership. Today the country is without a functioning opposition. The rules of the leadership contest, too, should have helped Mr Smith: some of Mr Corbyn's supporters had been prevented from voting, either because they signed up too late or because, having made offensive or anti-Labour comments on social media, they had been “purged”—as some of his backers melodramatically describe the party’s vetting processes. Surely, but surely, the moderates could put a dent in Mr Corbyn’s armour? No, came the answer. In Liverpool, where Labour’s conference...Continue reading...
