Focus on Your Customers

Apr 21 11:00am cultbranding.com
Your best customers are your Brand Lovers. Understanding the needs of your Brand Lovers and serving them better than anyone else is critical if you want to outmaneuver the competition and grow a long-term sustainable business. Here are ten reasons why your Brand Lovers are so important: Your Brand Lovers choose you more often than your competitors. To most Mac users, there’s no alternative competitor to choose from. Your Brand Lovers spread the word about your brand and create new customers for you. Basically, your best customers are the source of your word-of-mouth stream. Your Brand Lovers are by nature loyal customers. Customer loyalty is a better determinant of profitability than mass appeal. (Again, just ask Apple.) Focusing on your Brand Lovers and cultivating customer loyalty can help you double your return on assets (ROA). Similarly, serving your best customers can lead to explosive return on investment (ROI). Example: When Apple opened their retail stores they expected to generate $1,000/square foot. They actually generated $4,000/square foot. Ultimately, your Brand Lovers drive the profitability of your business. In The Loyalty Effect, Frederick Reichheld explains how a 5\% increase in customer loyalty can increase a company’s profitability by 40 to 95\%. Think […]...

The Apology: A Tough Art to Master

Apr 14 10:15am cultbranding.com
Here is a cautionary tale: United Airlines stock drops $1.4 Billion after a passenger-removal controversy. We all know that as children, we are taught the laws of forgiveness and encouraged to verbalize three simple words that are often the hardest to say, “I am sorry.” No one likes to admit when they’re wrong. It makes us feel vulnerable, exposed, and defenseless. We have a hard time putting down our armor long enough to see what we’ve done to the other person. As we move from the playgrounds of childhood to the “work grounds” of adulthood, uttering those three words doesn’t get any easier. Why are apologies necessary in business? Relationships are the bedrock of your business, and apologies mend relationships damaged by mistrust. Ethics expert Jim Lichtman, as quoted in Why We Talk, commented, “In business and public life today … the thing you erode away faster than anything else is trust. Once the credibility is gone … you’re going to have to work two, three, four times as hard to get it back.” This echoes conventional wisdom that it takes years to build up trust, and only seconds to destroy it. With such odds stacked against companies, how can […]...

By Chief Executive Optimist of The Life is good Company Bert Jacobs I met BJ 3 years ago at a business conference in Chicago. He led a group of 25 or so CEO’s through a workshop. When the session was over, he and I went out for a few beers at a local dive bar. We had some good laughs and a meandering, yet riveting conversation. I found it refreshing that he didn’t need to tell me about his accomplishments. I meet interesting people in my travels all the time, and I am sometimes the type that connects instantly, but this was different. Midway through our conversation, it became apparent to me that BJ and I would be friends for the rest of our lives. We talked about The Shawshank Redemption and the power of a good story. We spoke of the vision and persistence of The Wright Brothers. We talked about Bob Dylan and the way music and great lyrics enable your mind to travel. We talked about our childhoods and The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. We talked about the universe – and the incredible human journey. I think we talked about everything that night, except business.
