Domestic Fair Trade Label Set To Enrich Local Economies, Expand Retailer Options

Apr 24 10:50am Commodities
Fair Trade USA recently certified its first three domestic operations with a New England fishery, an Arizona produce farm and a California apparel factory, but it’s working to onboard more. With this fresh focus on American enterprises, the organization, which certifies more than 30 types of producer groups and products, including coffee, plants, home goods, spirits and apparel, is positioned for positive economic disruption. Not only does it set rigorous production and trade standards for participating agents, but it awards all certified operations per-sale funding to invest in their communities. “They vote democratically on how to use this money and implement various projects to address their needs on their own terms,” Jenna Larson, senior communications manager at Fair Trade USA, said of the Community Development Program. “We see a lot of investment in areas like healthcare and education, for example.” Scope Of Impact The expansion will also provide greater variety for retailers seeking Fair Trade products from diverse farm groups. Fair Trade partners with more than 1,000 companies and well-known brands to source products and ingredients from certified producers. The partner page on the nonprofit website lists 27 publicly traded manufacturers and distributors committed to selling Fair Trade products, including: Drink manufacturers such as PepsiCo, Inc. The Fintech Startup That's Bringing Fantasy Sports To The Real Life Stock Market

Apr 24 10:30am Commodities
Anil Mall is the President of Stockpools, a company that’s combined the aspects of fantasy sports and investing. Stockpools operates much in the same way a fantasy sports league does. Players join a themed contest, such as one centered around baseball season, and then draft from a pool of stocks to fill out their portfolio. Each contests offers prizes, and some allow players to exchange stocks with those not in their portfolio, similar to picking up free agents in fantasy sports. The contests can last anywhere from several weeks to several months, after which the players with the best returns are awarded prizes. The last contest, the Kitco 2017 Precious Metals Challenge, awarded over $12,000 in gold. Ahead of their latest contest, the 2017 Minerals Market Challenge, for which they’ve partnered with mining companies Kitco, Kootenay Silver Inc. and Northern Vertex Mining Corp, Benzinga caught up with Mall to discuss the company and how they try to make investing more accessible for millennials.  Benzinga: There are other stock market fantasy type services out there. What separates you from your peers? Mall: The biggest thing that separates us is that we are 100 percent risk-free. You don’t need credit cards. You don’t need a signup fee. You don’t need to pay anything when you win a prize or anything like that. So I’d say that’s the biggest separation from us and some of our competitors is that we’re 100 percent free. We don’t charge any of our users money to join up and play. Benzinga: What exactly is the Stockpools business model? Mall: All the traffic that’s brought to our site is generated using our advertising model. That’s ...Full story available on Benzinga.com...

Spell Out Relief: French Vote As Expected, So Attention Turns To Earnings, Tax Reform

Apr 24 10:02am Commodities
A relief rally looks likely Monday after the French centrist candidate made it to the next round of voting. European stock indices and the euro scampered higher as risk-haven assets like bonds and gold pulled back. The first-round victory by Emmanuel Macron means a run-off between him and the far-right candidate on May 7, and the French stock market hit nine-year highs. While the markets seem in a celebratory mood now because Macron — who supports keeping France in the European Union and on the euro — leads in the polls, remember Brexit and the Trump election last year. Both of those outcomes told us polls can’t always be trusted. So the next round of voting is likely to remain a focus in coming weeks. The euro hit five-month highs against the dollar after Sunday’s election, and that could give some commodities a boost. But crude oil didn’t seem to get too big a lift in the early going, staying below $50 a barrel. Now that the French vote is out of the way for the moment, attention might shift to some key political events here in the U.S. Last Wednesday, President Trump helped give stocks a boost by promising to release a tax plan this week. If that doesn’t come, it could weigh on the market. And Congress must work with Trump this week to avoid a possible government shutdown. If progress doesn’t start appearing on that front, it could be another pressure point ...Full story available on Benzinga.com...
