Giants reliever Smith reinjures pitching elbow, headed for MRI Through five weeks of spring training, the Giants had been extremely lucky with their health. Nobody got hurt badly enough to threaten his place on the Opening Day roster. Even with good news from the MRI, Smith’s chances of starting the season on the active roster are slim. The Giants have left-handed alternatives. The Giants acquired the 27-year-old reliever from the Brewers last Aug. 1 for pitcher Phil Bickford and catcher Andrew Susac. After a shaky start in San Francisco, Smith became huge down the stretch. Henry Schulman is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer.
