Double trouble: Denver Pioneers are No. 1 in hockey and lacrosse

Feb 20 3:50pm Yardbarker: Lacrosse
The University of Denver hockey team leapfrogged Minnesota-Duluth for the No. 1 national ranking in three major polls Monday and the DU men’s lacrosse team remained No. 1 after defeating Duke on Saturday. It’s the first time in school history the hockey and lacrosse teams — both perennial national powers — are No. 1 at the same time. The hockey team is coming off a two-game sweep (both 5-2 victories) at Miami (Ohio) last weekend to improve to 22-6-4. The Pioneers lead the National Collegiate Hockey Conference by two points over Minnesota-Duluth. Both teams have four regular-season games left before conference playoffs begin March 10. DU is in excellent position to garner one of four No. 1 seeds for the NCAA Tournament. Coach Bill Tierney’s DU lacrosse team is 2-0 after defeating Duke 14-9. The Pioneers continue a six-game, season-opening homestand Saturday against Cleveland Sta...

Short-handed Mammoth come up just short against Rush

Feb 19 8:24am Yardbarker: Lacrosse
Players were forced to play out of position. Guys were asked to fill roles they don’t normally fill. And yet, the Colorado Mammoth (4-4) went toe-to-toe with the two-time defending NLL champion Saskatchewan Rush (5-2) at SaskTel Centre for the full 60 minutes, losing by a single score, 8-7. The Mammoth got off to a shaky start offensively, and was held without a goal in the first quarter. It was the first time this season Colorado was kept off the board in any period. Down 4-0 early in the second, Colorado scored four straight in two-minutes, two-seconds to even the score. Callum Crawford, who was questionable due to an injury sustained last week, scored the first on a short-handed opportunity. He then assisted on Jacob Ruest’s goal – and the subsequent one – which was scored on the power-play by newcomer Stephen Keogh. Brent Adams, who was the hero in Vancouver a week ago, score...

Denver lacrosse stages late rally to defeat Duke

Feb 18 5:56pm Yardbarker: Lacrosse
On a sunny and warm Saturday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium, junior faceoff specialist Trevor Baptiste set the table for the top-ranked University of Denver and senior attack Connor Cannizzaro took advantage of the Pioneers’ continuous possessions in a fourth-quarter thrilling affair against Duke. Denver earned the 14-9 nonconference victory, scoring six of the game’s last seven goals after the Blue Devils tied it 8-8 with 9:01 remaining. Baptiste took control at the game’s final tie, winning six consecutive faceoffs that led to three consecutive DU goals — including his game-winning goal off the draw that made it 10-8 with 7:28 left. “I think just the whole team kind of stepped up at that point of the game,” Baptiste said. “We kept the morale high, went on runs and stayed at that top level.” Cannizzaro scored twice in the last 1:10 an assisted on Denver’s f...
