NYers Are Sharing Subway Swipes Today To Protest Broken Windows Policing

The MTA's most recent fare hike went into effect on Sunday, and advocates are offering free subway swipes in low-income communities of color across the five boroughs today to mark the first pricier Monday commute. While the base fare held steady this time around, at $2.75, a single swipe has been untenable for many low-income rides for years—more than a quarter of low-income, working New Yorkers were unable to afford subway or bus fare at least once in 2015, according to a recent study from the Community Service Society, a nonprofit that advocates for low-income New Yorkers.
