PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Five incredible years flashed before Rob Pannell’s eyes moments after the final whistle blew of his last collegiate lacrosse game Saturday.

“I don’t think I have enough time to tell you what Rob Pannell has meant to our program,” Cornell head coach Ben DeLuca said.

Pannell, the Big Red’s fifth-year senior, had another solid outing, scoring five goals and dishing out two assists. The points pushed Pannell into the top spot on the NCAA’s all-time points list with 254. Entering the weekend, Duke assistant coach Matt Danowski held the record with 253. Danowski lost the record but his Blue Devils won the game, beating Cornell 16-14 to advance to Monday’s national championship at Lincoln Financial Field.

Cornell mounted a major rally after trailing 14-7 entering the final quarter. However, All-American Brendon Fowler won a critical faceoff and Jordan Wolf finished a long run from the wing with a goal in the final 40 seconds to stop the Big Red's momentum.

As Duke players celebrated, just feet away, the best collegiate lacrosse player in the country was almost in a trance.

“It’s been an incredible fifth year, an incredible five years at Cornell,” said Pannell, trying to keep his emotions in check. “I love Cornell more than anything; I love Cornell lacrosse. It’s the best program in the country.
“I wasn’t going to give up a fifth year.”

Pannell opened the scoring on Saturday with a rocket shot early in the first quarter. The Big Red jumped out to a 5-2 lead, but trailed 7-6 at halftime. A disastrous third quarter saw the Blue Devils outscore Cornell 7-1 to lead 14-7 with 15 minutes to play.

Cornell, and Pannell, then mounted a monster rally with Pannell assisting on Connor English’s sweet underhanded gem, and scoring back-to-back goals to cut the lead to 14-12. Connor Buczek drew the Big Red to 15-14, but Duke was able to hang on down the stretch.

Pannell’s sole purpose in 2013 was to lead his team to a national championship. The scoring record was secondary.

“The record is what it is,” he said. “I would give up everything for a chance to play on Monday.”

Also holding back tears, DeLuca tried to put into words what the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer meant to his program.

“You talk about one of the greatest leaders our program has ever seen,” said DeLuca of Pannell, a Smithtown, N.Y., native. “One of the most loyal young men, one of the hardest workers, one of the most complete players in the game who was never satisfied with where he was. He continued to push the bar not only for himself, but for his teammates.

“You talk about leaving someplace better than you found it. … Rob Pannell leaves Cornell lacrosse better than he found it. His legacy will be lasting and permanent. He is a special young man.”

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- David Lawson scored the winning goal with 6:35 left in the fourth quarter to lift Duke to a 16-14 victory against Cornell in the Division I Men's Lacrosse semifinals Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- One Cornell student-athlete, wrestler Kyle Dake, finished a record-breaking career in March with his fourth NCAA title at a fourth different weight class. Another who wears the red of Cornell, lacrosse star Rob Pannell, will try to wrestle the “big man on campus” title away from Dake this weekend in Philadelphia.

Pannell will lead Cornell against Duke on Saturday afternoon in one of two NCAA Division I Lacrosse Championship semifinals at Lincoln Financial Field. With seven points, he will set the all-time NCAA career points record, passing Duke’s Matt Danowski, who scored 253 from 2004-08. This season Pannell has scored 42 goals and dished out 53 assists for 95 points. Only twice this season has he recorded fewer than two goals. Seven times he has totaled at least six points in a game.

In last weekend’s quarterfinal victory against Ohio State, Pannell scored two goals and registered six assists. In the first round, a win against Maryland, the attacker scored four goals and had three assists.

“I try to keep my mind off it, but it is what it is,” Pannell said. “It’s a pretty big record, a pretty big deal.

“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t thinking about it, but come game day, once the game starts, it will be the last thing on my mind. If we’re playing well and if we’re in a good position to win, most likely I’ll be playing well as well.”

Cornell head coach Ben DeLuca describes Pannell as one of those players who “come along once a generation.”

Pannell admits that winning a national championship is at the top of his list. Records are great, but helping the Big Red hoist the team trophy on Monday is priority No. 1. Most of the lacrosse nation figured that out when, after a season-ending injury last year, Pannell did not join the professional ranks in lacrosse or in finance.

“I would give it all up for a ring,” Pannell told the New York Times.

He added to his already full trophy case this week when he was named – for the second time – the USILA’s Player of the Year, joining four others in the history of lacrosse to win twice.

Pannell is also a three-time All-American, two-time Tewaaraton Trophy finalist and the first player in the history of the Ivy League to be named Player of the Year three times (2010, 2011, and 2013).

Seven points and a national championship might just give a Cornell lacrosse player the “Big Man on Campus” crown all by himself.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Take a little wrestling, mix it with a one-man rugby scrum, then add a little trickery and you get a lacrosse faceoff. Leverage, strength, hand-eye coordination, and above all, toughness are all required.

“A couple words I would use are quickness and toughness,” Syracuse junior Chris Daddio said. “You see a lot of bigger guys taking faceoffs, guys that jam you up. But they’ve implemented some new rules and you are starting to see guys who are smaller using a lot more quickness … like a turf rat or something.”

For many it is about ownership, about being in control of a situation.

“I like it because it is about me getting my team the ball,” said the 190-pound Daddio. “I like having that weight on my shoulders, being the guy that gets us into our offense. It can be mentally straining, especially in those close games."

Daddio will definitely feel that weight when he leads the Orange against Denver in the semifinals of the 2013 NCAA Division I Lacrosse Championships on Saturday.

“First and foremost it is the attitude you take,” assistant coach Leland Rogers said. “Like any position on the field it is a role and that role is to get the ball for the team. You have to have a certain personality, a certain attitude, a certain character."

Rogers was a champion wrestler, winning a New York High School state championship along with a Division III title. He works with SU’s faceoff specialists.

“There are a lot of different moves; guys who are strong, powerful, low to the ground, have good balance, guys who know how to use their body. I personally like the wrestlers. But, in facing off, if you are not quick off the whistle you are going to lose; that initial jump is so important. There really are a lot of things that go into being successful.”

It can best be described as “dirty.” There are things going on in the moments after the whistle blows that should require a parental advisory. Sticks and stones, and sometimes words, converge into a mass of chaos with the end goal being possession of a small ball.

“The face-off guys are different; they are a different breed,” Duke head coach Jon Danowski said. “It really is something unique in our sport; there really isn’t anything comparable in basketball, baseball, football or hockey. But it is certainly a key part of our game.”

Daddio has been successful on 50 percent of faceoffs in 2013. On Saturday, he should go head-to-head with Denver’s Chase Carraro and Chace Calkin, a pair of seniors who take faceoffs for the Pioneers.

The other semifinal, pitting Cornell against Duke, includes two of the nation’s best. The Big Red’s Doug Tesoriero, a 180-pound junior from Syosset, N.Y., has taken 382 of his team’s 449 faceoffs in 2013, winning 226 (59 percent). The Blue Devils’ Brendan Fowler, a junior from Wantagh, N.Y., has won 66 percent of the time, lining up for 449 of his squad’s 517 faceoffs. He is a first-team All-American and the Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year.

Fowler played in nine games for Duke’s football squad in 2011. He wrestled in high school.

“It’s almost a rock-paper-scissors type of game,” Tesoriero said. “I actually use the same move all the time, though. It comes down to who has the most speed, whoever gets the best jump off the whistle.

“The bottom line, though, is that you have to be tough out there. It’s been described as like being in a dogfight. [Saturday] is going to be a battle. [Fowler] is one of the best.”

Fowler is likewise ready for a grind-it-out afternoon.

“Fast hands and picking up a ground ball, that is what is most important,” Fowler said. “I think the No. 1 thing is about being quick off the whistle. We have put a big emphasis on faceoffs this week. [Tesoriero] is really good, so we’ve taken extra time focusing on being ready.”

Perhaps, at least mentally, being the faceoff guy is like a closer in baseball. Every game h...
