Fierce raged the fight; a wild, barbarian horde,Thirsting for blood, surged like a stormy sea,Around a little band, wielding the spear and sword,Seeking to live and evermore be free,Fast fell they there, as grass before the blade,Until but one remained, who then in deep despair,By night, in secret there, the tribal records laid,Then died alone, last of his nation there.

I want to draw your attention to great new temple-related material which has been posted at the Academy for Temple Studies website at TempleStudies.org.

An “Enoch and the Temple” conference occurred in February 2013, with a keynote by George Nickelsburg. Videos of the conference are now available.
The Temple Studies Bibliography has been updated again, with inclusions of 900 more titles since its launch in the Fall of 2012, including a number of dissertations on temple themes. The bibliography is over 700 typed pages long!
A list of online Enoch resources has been posted.
Book reviews, Article Abstracts, and Dissertation Abstracts have also now begun to be posted to the site, coming from titles in the Temple Studies Bibliography.

These are great new resources for any student of temple studies to increase in learning. You can also subscribe by email to the Academy for Temple Studies, to get updates as soon as they’re posted.

MR says: Interesting rundown of Mormons on Pinterest, what it looks like, and how we use it.

Last September, I wrote about the Mormon “hey girl” meme as a signifier of Mormon culture. I’d like to continue in that vein today when talking about Mormon pins on Pinterest. I’m not the first JI blogger to tackle the subject of Mormons and Pinterest–if you’re unfamiliar with the concept of Pinterest, go take a look at this excellent post, outlining the functionalities of Pinterest and examining how it intersects with notions of Mormon womanhood, written by Andrea in March 2012. A quick excerpt:

The reasons for Mo-Pinning are not really a mystery. For the scrapbooking, stamping, and crafting set, Pinterest is an alternate virtual outlet for the domestic inclinations of the young Mormon mommy. Pinterest remains relatively free from conflict on divisive religious and political issues, so it also acts as an escape valve from other online forums. And for the particularly zealous LDS proselytizers, what better forum for sharing G.A. quotes, scriptures, and reminders to the world that “we really are Christians!”

The Saints at War project started in 2000 with the purpose of gathering stories of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving their country during wartime. Since then, hundreds of accounts have been submitted and published in a series of books or recounted in video documentaries.

These stories not only honor the veterans' memory and legacy of service, they have also been a source of inspiration and strength to many Latter-day Saints, said Robert Freeman, author and director of the Saints at War project.

MR says: Really great, substantial article about the promise of BYU's animation department--and about the message they're sharing with Hollywood to increase positive influences in film. Fun to read.

Allen Ostergar stood at the front of the lecture hall with a stiff and bashful smile, or maybe it was just stage fright, and started his pitch. Open on a deadly pirate ship, he said— “the deadliest of all the pirate ships to, like, sail the seas.”It was a Tuesday evening at Brigham Young University, in Provo, Utah, and the school’s computer-animation program had assembled its 70-odd students to choose their next project — the one film they would be producing over the next three semesters. Ostergar, a junior from Southern California, was up first.

A panning shot across the ship’s deck, he explained, would introduce the thuggish crew: two pirates take turns slugging each other in the gut. Another stands around eating habanero peppers and blowing fire. “One idea I had,” Ostergar said, “was one guy could be bench-pressing a cannon. And then it zooms out a little bit, and then there’s a bigger guy that’s bench-pressing that guy!”

Eventually the camera would zero in on the main character, Off-White Dakin. Ostergar had done an animated sequence showing the lantern-jawed pirate sitting behind a barrel — hiding.

At the end of King Benjamin’s speech and after his people have taken on them the name of Christ, he says some things using an analogy of writing and blotting that are important to understand: 11 And I would that ye should remember also, that this is the name that I said I should give unto you that never should be blotted out, except it be through transgression; therefore, take heed that ye do not transgress, that the name be not blotted out of your hearts. 12 I say unto you, I would that ye should remember to retain the name written always in your hearts, that ye are not found on the left hand of God, but that ye hear and know the voice by which ye shall be called, and also, the name by which he shall call you. (Mosiah 5:11-12) This idea of writing and blotting out is an interesting figure of speech. I had the idea in my head for the longest time that to blog something out was to cross it out with more ink so that it couldn’t be read, but with some research, I found out that wasn’t what it meant at all. There is blotting paper that is used to absorb extra ink after someone has written so that ink dries faster, but that is, I think, a relatively new invention. Somewhere—I wish I could remember or find the source again—I read that in ancient times there was no way to erase ink from a writing surface except to re-wet it and press some kind of cloth to it to try to lift the softened ink up and out. Removing the ink by blotting took a while, but it was possible. So, King Benjamin uses this image to teach that when we take the name of Christ upon us, it should be written on our hearts, but sin and transgression have the effect of blotting that name slowly out of our hearts, which is why we have to take heed that we do not transgress.
Someone asked me recently what the qualities of the ideal gospel doctrine teacher would be. Once we got talking about it there seemed to be a middle ground where instruction wouldn’t be too boring, nor too overwhelming. Where class participation was encouraged, but not allowed to run rampant. Where preparation was encouraged by not reading all of the material in class, but you could still follow the lesson if you had a late night with the baby and didn’t read.
As these qualities added up I thought about how important teaching really is, and how little it has to do with intelligence or book knowledge.
What does a perfect gospel doctrine teacher look like?
How does a gospel doctrine teacher know if they are effective?
Have you had any classroom gospel teaching moments that were perfect?Continue reading at the original source →

After leaving for work last Friday, my husband sent me a brief text. “Sister Monson passed away this morning.” I was surprised. I think most of us were. The papers said after several weeks of being in the hospital, she passed away peacefully, surrounded by family. She was 85.

Her daughter, Ann M. Dibb, told the Deseret News that President Monson said to Frances the day before her passing, “Tomorrow is May 17. It’s my father’s birthday, and it’s your father’s birthday.” Ann said her heart skipped a beat. “I thought, ‘Who knows what’s going to happen tomorrow?’ …That was an indication to me. It’s been almost 60 years since my mother has been with her father. It was time that they welcomed her home.”
While Sister Monson managed to stay out of the spotlight, we were not unaware of her presence, and her grounding influence on her family and husband.
Today at noon, loved ones and admirers will gather at Temple Square to remember her life. I’ve spent some time today learning about her, wanting to know the heart of a woman who could offer such incredible support to a man who spent his lifetime in high-profile church service.
Ann said she was a woman who did not require attention; she purposely chose the role of supporter. One year after she and President Monson were married in 1948, he was called to be Bishop. President Monson was only 22 years old. At age 27 he was called to be Stake President, at 31, President of the Canadian Mission, and at 36 he was called to be an Apostle of the Lord. He was able to do what he did, because of Sister Monson’s selfless service behind the scenes.
Ann remembers that President Monson was gone a lot. Frances developed patience and modeled that to her children. Her mother knew things didn’t get better if you complained about them, so she didn’t. She did everything with quiet acceptance. She was always faithful, always steady, always there to listen when President Monson came home. Ann said that while Frances was given specific gifts and abilities, she was also refined. She let challenges and hardships make her better.
Frances was the go-to person in the Monson family for assembling doll houses and bicycles on Christmas morning. She fixed plumbing leaks and electrical switches on her own (a skill President Monson admits was not his). She had an endearing sense of humor. You may remember one General Conference when President Monson said,
“Several years ago my dear wife went to the hospital. She left a note behind for the children: ‘Dear children, do not let Daddy touch the microwave’ — followed by a comma ‘or the stove, or the dishwasher or the dryer.’ I’m embarrassed to add any more to that list.”
During college, she excelled in Math and Science. When asked why she chose such difficult classes she said, “Because that’s where the cute boys were.”
Ann described her parents’ relationship as complete only with each other. Elder Richard G. Scott said,
“She is so loyal; she would do anything for him and for the work he has been called to do. They certainly have deep love for each other.”
Frances had a history of falling during her later years, and in 2008 suffered a terrible fall that left her in a coma for 18 days. President Monson wept at her side. Ann said her mother knew what it meant to endure well, and at times, chose to keep living because she knew of President Monson’s need for her.
Thinking of the demanding work both she and President Monson had to assume due to his responsibilities, I have reflected on the purpose of supporting each other in various callings, and paths.
A woman I admire once described how helpless she felt as she went to the hospital to watch her daughter give birth to her second child. The daughter’s first child had died soon after birth due to unexpected complications. Now, this mother and grandmother who was hopeful but anxious, wasn’t able to hold her daughter’s hand during the birth, so she stood on the other side of the room and locked eyes with her daughter. Throughout the pain and uncertainty, they simply held onto each other with their eyes.
Sometimes all we can do is be there. Be the face of certainty and calm for someone we love.
I marvel at Sister Monson’s ability to be there for her husband. Her deliberate choice to honor his mantle as prophet and apostle, to keep the home fires burning so he could do his work, is humbling and admirable.
President Monson reflected,
“If there ...

MR says: Are you looking for some outstanding books for your nine and older children to enjoy throughout the summer? How about a great read-aloud book to help settle kids of all ages down for the warm summer nights? This list of new books (that includes historical fiction, fantasy, humor, science fiction and mystery) will fit your hot summer nights and days. So enjoy!

The Vine Basket by Josanne La ValleyThis book is a look inside East Turkestan that has recently been taken over by Chinese rule. A young Uyghur girl is dealing with the oppression that is taking over, and her family fears they may lose their farm. She sets out for the market where she hopes to sell enough peaches to help her family, but a tourist sees her unusual vine basket. And this stranger brings hope to her little life. The story is written so well that you are constantly pulling and hoping for the best for this girl – and her people! Hold Fast by Blue BalliettThis mystery is another sophisticated storyline that will keep you guessing to the end. Eleven-year-old Early lives meagerly with her little brother and parents in a one-room apartment in Chicago. But when her father, who works at the library, suddenly goes missing, and there’s a break-in at the apartment, Early and her family have to move to a homeless shelter. But Early is determined to find her father and proceeds to begin to solve this highly technical mystery. What Came From the Starsby Gary D. SchmidtThis book is a mixture of science fiction, fantasy and realistic fiction. A distant planet is fighting the evil forces, and in an attempt to save their most valuable possession, a glowing necklace, they throw it into space. This magical chain lands in sixth-grader Tommy's lunchbox. He proceeds to put it on and that's when amazing things begin to happen. For instance, when he begins to draw a picturesque scene of a river, the water actually flows. He finds that he has new knowledge about another planet including words that are completely foreign to him. But now a big problem exists for him: the evil forces have come to earth to reclaim this necklace. Once Upon a Marigold, Twice Upon a Marigold and Thrice Upon a Marigoldby Jean FerrisThese are wonderful stories that read like classic fairy tales. The first book in this series begins with Christian being raised by a troll. He spies a beautiful maiden, Princess Marigold, across the river whom he instantly falls in love with. But she is already bequeathed to marry a nobleman. But when Christian learns that Marigold's life, as well as the kingdom, is in danger from the evil queen, he must save them all. The following two books in the series follow Christian and Marigold as they become king and queen against all odds.Zebra Forest by Adina Rishe GewirtzAnnie and Rew, live next to zebra forest—a place filled with dark and light trees--with their elderly Granny. Annie and her little brother have always been told that their father died in a fight and the man who fought with him is in prison. But everything is about to change when someone breaks into their home and everyone in that house is about to learn something they never knew. The story has language that seems to drip with eloquence off the pages and the action is non-stop!Who Could That Be at This Hour? (All The Wrong Questions) by Lemony SnicketThis prequel shocases a young Lemony as he begins his investigations by attempting to locate a priceless heirloom. As he travels with an experienced investigator, the reader begins to question who actually stole the heirloom, as well as the identity of the investigator. There is so much foreshadowing and red herrings that it reads like a sophisticated Sherlock Holmes mystery written for kids. The Not Even Once Clubby Wendy Watson NelsonIllustrated in beautiful color, this LDS children’s picture book tells the story of a young boy named Tyler who, after moving, makes a new friend, Kyle, at church in Primary. Tyler wants to join a tree house club with his classmates, but first must make a solemn promise: he must do his best never to break the Word of Wisdom and other Church standards. Not even once. Janitors, Book 2by Tyler WhitesidesIn this continuation of the popular Janitors series, the Rebels must hide Spencer Zumbro from the Bureau of Educational Maintenance, and sneak him, along with Daisy, to supposed safety at New Forest Academy. But even there the battle with the intelli......

by LDS Living Staff

source: LDSLiving.com

MR says: We got a chance to chat with T.C. Christensen, the director of the new film Ephraim's Rescue. Here's what he had to say about everything from around-the-house projects to why he makes movies.

What inspired you to become a filmmaker? My high school aptitude test came back saying that what I would be most suited for was to be a candy wrapper. As fulfilling as that job may have been, I had already decided years earlier to work in the film industry. Watching my Dad film home movies fascinated me. Plus, pretty much the rest of my family works in the medical field, and I knew I wasn't smart enough to do that so I'd better find something else! How do you find the stories you make into movies and decide what projects to work on? Our stories come from various sources: research, referrals, family stories. I put a lot of thought into choosing a project. A feature film for me pretty much takes up 2-3 years and ultimately, it's the story that makes or breaks a film, so I try not to just jump into a project without really thinking it through. How did the focus on LDS filmmaking come about? Did it come to you, or was it a genre you specifically sought out? The truth is that only about 30 percent of what I do results in LDS films, but it is the area I have found to be the most rewarding. As members of the Church we have such a great heritage. I find the stories that have been left to us to be amazing and inspiring AND they have been the best stories that I have been able to find. If it's the best story, it's the best choice for a film. When you’re not working on a film, what do you enjoy doing? As my wife will attest, I don't do much else. I don't mow the lawn, I don’t know how to fix things, I can't even shut a drawer all the way. I'm pretty much always either away at work or home at work. In 2010, you were invited to join the American Society of Cinematographers, an elite group of around 330 members. What was that experience like for you? Being invited into the A.S.C. is still surreal for me. As part of the process to get in, I was interviewed by an amazing group of cinematographers and for some unknown reason, they left a crack open in the door and I ran through it like a rat sneaking into the house. I honestly don't deserve it, but I'm not giving it back!Oftentimes your movies contain scenes that can be very spiritual. How do you handle shooting moments like that? The scenes you refer to are the culmination of many hours of thought and pre-production . . . trying to write the scene in a way that I feel will convey the spirit of what happened and convey deep meaning to viewers . . . casting actors who have the depth to pull it off and a terrific crew that executes and adds to my ideas . . . then having a great editor (my son Tanner) who can see through all of my mistakes and find the jewels to string together to make the most out of the footage. Many of your films have been historical works with narratives, like 17 Miracles. What is your philosophy on the line between historical fiction and reality in your storytelling? With any of those films you are referring to, I am very consciously NOT making a documentary. I am making a film BASED on history. Though we in the Church have more journals and written history than most cultures, they still tend to be very thin when it comes down to fleshing out a character and writing dialogue. I am committed to being true to the incidents we portray but feel justified in taking license to fill in the blanks. That includes my feeble attempts to add humor. Though the people we portray in our films have lived amazing and exemplary lives, they didn't live their lives like a movie script. So I try to frame the events in a way that tells a story that will be satisfying to the audience. What advice would you give to aspiring filmmakers? I recently read that there are more students in film school in the U.S. than there are in medical school. That means there is a lot of competition out there for not that many positions in the world of film. The good news for any wannabe is that there's always room at the top, and if a student has some talent and is willing to work hard, they can make it. As in most professions and in life, hard work trumps talent almost every time. How do you want people to remember you—in your career and in your life in general? I would like to remembered as a skinn......

MR says: Learn more about the Piano Guys' new album and watch their hit video "Berlin," written for 12 cellos.

The Piano Guys are back with a new album, The Piano Guys - Volume 2, with their unique take on music from Pachelbel to The Turtles to Bruno Mars, available for the first time on CD on May 7, 2013 from Portrait, Sony Masterworks’ new adult contemporary imprint. Also available is the Deluxe version which includes the CD plus the 12 corresponding music videos – available for the first time on DVD!The recording features imaginative mash-ups and arrangements that made their last album so successful, plus a few original recordings including the previously unreleased song “Berlin” as well as “Waterfall,” creating an incomparable style that appeals to audiences from all walks of life and across generations. The Piano Guys just released a music video for “Berlin” on YouTube. Inspired by a recent trip to Germany, the song combines both picturesque classical vibes and a pop/dubsteb feel creating an abstract depiction of how the group felt while travelling and performing in Berlin.Volume 2 also includes violin sensation Lindsey Stirling on the iconic movie theme “Mission Impossible.” Of the collaboration with Stirling, Steve Sharp Nelson says "This has been on The Piano Guys' list for a long time -- and many fans have been clamoring for the combo too. On the video we had to pull out all the stops -- special effects, stunts, and a little slapstick! Working with Lindsey was so much fun. She is super talented and enjoys what she does just like we do!”The Piano Guys began making music videos for fun and their “hobby” turned into a worldwide phenomenon as their self-made YouTube videos continue to amass millions of views. Their hit self-titled debut album, released last October on Sony Masterworks, has been #1 on the Billboard New Age Chart for the last 23 weeks and remains on Billboard’s Top 200 Chart. Their unique style has garnered rave reviews and performances on The Today Show, Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Katie, CBS This Morning, Fox & Friends among others. Ironically, The Piano Guys, who got their name from a piano store in St. George, Utah, are a quartet featuring only two musicians - only one being a pianist. Store owner Paul Anderson devised a Facebook promotional page and a YouTube channel featuring well-established, self-described “New Age Classical” pianist Jon Schmidt, who teamed up musically with Steven Sharp Nelson, an innovative cellist. Together, Schmidt and Nelson form the musical core of The Piano Guys, with Anderson - who has since closed the store. Al van der Beek, the fourth “Guy,” heads up the group’s studio operations, and also assists in co-writing and arranging, as well as percussion and vocal texturing. They create their music videos all together. The Piano Guys and will kick off a fall tour in October. PBS continues to air their dedicated TV special, “Live At Red Butte Garden” which was filmed at Red Butte Garden Amphitheatre in Utah, in March 2013. Sony Masterworks comprises Masterworks Broadway, Masterworks, Okeh, Portrait, RCA Red Seal and Sony Classical imprints. MR says: Butch Cassidy is arguably one of the most infamous bandits of the Old West. His lucrative heists, daring schemes of tactical brilliance many years ahead of their time, wrested hundreds of thousands of dollars from banks, trains, and businesses—equivalent to multi-millions today. Only caught once on a charge of horse theft for which he served 18 months in jail, the wildly successful Cassidy earned himself such fame that pop culture today still knows his name. And he was a Mormon.

Photo from WikipediaA Mormon outlaw? It seems like it should be an oxymoron. Latter-day Saints take pride in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, and virtuous, and in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law. Cassidy may have struggled with that last bit, but small things in his mild manner like a commitment not to drink alcohol or gamble ring familiar to practicing Mormons. He may have left the Church, but the influence of his Mormon upbringing never completely left him. Born in 1866 in Beaver, Utah, as Robert LeRoy Parker to pioneers Maximillian Parker and Ann Campbell Gillies, Cassidy came from faithful Mormon stock. It is likely he was baptized into the Church at the age of 8, but by the time the time he was 13, he had stopped attending almost entirely. The posited reasons for his decline in faith range from blaming the example of his father who also only attended meetings sporadically to a brush he had with the law where he was unjustly accused and treated poorly by officials. Certainly, though, it was the influence of his friend and mentor Mike Cassidy that played the largest role. Whatever all the contributing factors were, Robert changed his name to protect his family and left home at 18 to become one of the most well-known bandits in the Old West. But in between his famous train heists and bank robberies, Cassidy was an upstanding if unorthodox man. In one instance, he heard of a farmer facing foreclosure and graciously paid off the mortgage, delivering the deed to the man. The next day, he robbed the same bank for the exact amount he’d paid to get his money back. On another occasion, he recovered a horse stolen from 16-year-old Harry Ogden, who had spent his life savings on the animal. After confirming he had retrieved the correct steed, Cassidy ordered the bandit to leave the country, because there was no room for people who would harm a young boy. Stories like these earned Cassidy the distinction of being a gentleman bandit and Robin Hood, a role with which he readily identified. Cassidy himself once wrote, “The best way to hurt them [those who take advantage of the poor] is through their pocket book. They will holler louder than if you cut off both legs. I steal their money just to hear them holler. Then I pass it out among those who really need it.” One of Cassidy’s known criminal associates, Matt “The Mormon Kid” Warner, described him as “a good-natured outlaw.” Commenting further, he added, “Though he was a dead-shot, Butch didn’t like pulling the trigger . . . . He was revered even among lawmen.” Indeed, throughout his lengthy career in the United States, Cassidy befriended many deputies and went to great lengths to avoid killing. After fleeing to South America with longtime partner Harry “The Sundance Kid” Longabaugh, Cassidy tried to start a reputable ranch, but when times got tough he turned back to banditry to make ends meet. It is believed that he died in the spectacular Bolivian shootout depicted in the 1969 Robert Redford film, though there are many claims that he faked his death. Whether or not he died there remains a hotly contested debate to this day, but one thing we know for certain: despite his chosen profession and the vicious stereotypes associated with it, he was a man with his own moral code who was deeply affected by his heritage.Read more about Butch Cassidy and other infamous Mormon bandits in Butch Cassidy and Other Mormon Outlaws of the Old West by Kathryn Jenkins Gordon.
