Twitter isn't quite done refining TweetDeck's interface following recent web and desktop overhauls -- there's still a little tweaking left in store. The company has just updated the Chrome and web versions of its social app with grab handles that let users drag and drop columns at will. It's also easier to jump back to the top of a column when there are unread tweets, and a selected column now snaps to the sidebar when there are fewer than three total columns on the screen. While the fresh interface is web-only for now, those who prefer the native Mac and Windows apps should get matching upgrades in the near future.

It was a type of optical illusion that could only be accomplished using the tripod, Adobe Photoshop, and lots of patience. These days you may not need expensive photo editing software to shoot levitation photos, as a recently released iPhone and iPad app called Levitagram ($1.99) enables you to create levitation photos in a few relatively easy steps.Continue reading the articleRead full post: Create Amazing Levitation Photos With iOS App Levitagram

While Viacom hasn't always understood how this whole internet video thing works, it's showing some tech savviness today with confirmation of rumors that it's joining Twitter's Amplify program. Beginning with the MTV Video Music Awards on August 25th, Viacom will deliver ad-backed video highlights on Twitter for shows and events across its channel range, including MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon. In theory, the agreement is a win for everyone: Viacom and Twitter get more revenue, while we get a legal way to revisit those inevitable celebrity slip-ups. The two sides haven't said how long their partnership will last, although we wouldn't be surprised if results from the VMA broadcast help shape the deal's future.

Apparently, Microsoft has just remembered that it needs gamers to sell a gaming console. In a complete and humiliating reversal, Microsoft's next-gen console just dropped some of the contentious bits that had formerly loyal gamers shouldering pitchforks and heading to Redmond. And thank goodness — now we've got a fairer fight on our hands.

See also: 5 Games That Make The Sony-Microsoft Console War Meaningless

So what's out? Microsoft brought the axe down on its requirement that the Xbox One would need to connect to the Internet once every 24 hours, and also rolled back its most user unfriendly copy-protection (i.e., DRM) limitations. In an official blog post, Xbox President Don Mattrick invites gamers to "[t]rade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today." The company also dropped regional restrictions for games in the Xbox One's stable.
And unlike last week, the Xbox One leads the PlayStation 4 in launch day pre-orders today.
Features On The Chopping Block
Unfortunately, hushing the public backlash against the Xbox One comes at the cost of a few previously-announced features, at least at launch. The Xbox One will not allow users to share games with up to 10 "family" members — one of the system's cooler new perks.
And some old annoyances are back, too. For instance, users can download games from disk to the Xbox One's hard drive in order to improve performance — but they'll still need to put the physical disk in the console to play them.
Was The Xbox 360 The Gamer's Console All Along?
Why did Microsoft change its tune? As much as the company paraded the next-generation Xbox One as an all-in-one living room entertainment system, it's still a gaming console at heart.
According to a surprising 2013 Nielsen report, the Xbox is where the gamers were all along. In 2012 PlayStation 3 users lead the charge on non-gaming entertainment, spending almost a quarter of their time streaming movies or TV shows — not playing games — on the console. Xbox 360 users spent around 13% of their usage time for video-on-demand and other forms of streaming media.

PlayStation 3 owners only spent 46% of their time playing online or offline games, allocating the rest to the broader entertainment features that are supposedly the domain of Microsoft, while Xbox 360 users spent 66% of their time playing games on the console. Sure, Sony's inclusion of Blu-Ray on its last-gen console counts for something, but video on demand and streaming media accounted for the lion's share of the difference — and that's something both consoles have equal access to.
Can Microsoft's Backtrack Bring Gamers Back?
Last week, Sony jumped at the opportunity to spin the PlayStation 4 as a console built for gamers, not just for whatever family members happen to be ambling around the living room. And for once, the gaming community at large seemed agree on something — namely that it wouldn't stand for the Xbox One's restrictive policies and it was happy to pre-order the PlayStation 4 instead. Pre-orders for Sony's PS4 poured in.
Now that Microsoft has been humbled by the core gamer demographic it threw to the wolves just last week, the big question is whether it's done enough to repair the damage. We'll have to track console pre-orders and social media to see how it all plays out, at least until the consoles hit the market this fall. By that time, the rules of the game may have shifted yet again.

Now, a video game version is on the way, but some fans are outraged to see an American voice actor cast in the leading role. The upcoming third-person open-world game by Avalanche Studios, due out sometime next year for PCs, the PS4, and Xbox One, made an appearance at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), where Ausgamers was told the developer wanted "someone generic" to play Max. In fact, Avalanche founder Christofer Sundberg told IGN, "We treated this as a completely new property, and that was really the only way for us to take on a licensed game. It's the first licensed game we've ever taken on. And we wanted to treat it like an original IP. The setting -- where it is in the world -- has really nothing to do with the Mad Max video game. It's really a game to do with the relationships between different people in this world." For Aussie film, sci-fi, and "Ma...
Samsung Android 4.2 Update Breakdown: Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy S3 & More is a post by Adam Mills from Gotta Be Mobile. The Samsung Galaxy S4 arrived with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and Samsung’s new TouchWiz Nature UX 2.0 on board ushering in a new era of Samsung Android software. The Galaxy S4 won’t be the only one getting these upgrades though. In fact, the Samsung Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2 and more will likely be getting outfitted with new software. And while details are a bit scarce, there are still several bits that have surfaced and it’s time to take a deep dive into what we know about Samsung’s upcoming Android 4.2 updates. All the way back in November of last year, Google announced a brand new piece of Android software dubbed Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, an incremental update to the Android Jelly Bean operating system and one that replaced the previous version, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. While the software was quick to arrive for Nexus devices like the Nexus 4, the software has been slow to roll out to some of the biggest non-Nexus names. In fact, Samsung’s Galaxy S4 became one of the first non-Nexus devices to sport Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and its features when it arrived back in April of this year. HTC’s flagship, the HTC One, remains on Android 4.1, a point of contention between HTC and the early adopters of its new Android device. We know that HTC is preparing to deliver Android 4.2 updates to many of its older devices, including the HTC One, and we also know that Samsung is looking to do the same. Samsung has a great track record when it comes to software updates and while it may not be on par with Apple in terms of keeping devices updated, it’s certainly better than most Android manufacturers. Samsung. like other Android manufacturers, has kept relatively quiet about upcoming updates. However, we have seen some information emerge about not only Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, but the new TouchWiz that arrived with the Galaxy S4. In the build up to these software updates, it’s now time to take a close look at how the Samsung Android 4.2 update situation breaks down as we look closely at what we know about the updates for the Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2 and more. Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Maybe the most anticipated Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update of the bunch is the one for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, a device that arrived shortly before the debut of Android 4.2 with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean stock and on board. Samsung has not yet announced a release date for the Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update though rumors originally put the software as being out sometime in May or June. That apparently won’t be happening thanks to the new TouchWiz 2.0 features that Samsung is evidently putting on board the Galaxy Note 2.
The new system is essentially an artificial pancreas. (Credit: Cambridge Consultants) As recently as the 1950s, one in three people diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes died within 25 years of diagnosis. People in the '50s had to monitor their glucose levels via urine testing and inject themselves with animal-derived insulin. How far we've come. Today, researchers are working to develop an artificial pancreas for people with Type 1 diabetes that works with a smartphone or tablet to both monitors blood glucose levels and disperses insulin 24/7. The goal, they say, is to reduce complications and improve the life expectancy of the millions of people with the metabolic disease -- because even though only 7 percent of them now die within 25 years of diagnosis, this rate is still far above general population mortality. The system, being developed by researchers out of the Institute of Metabolic Science at the University of Cambridge along with product development firm Cambridge Consultants, will rely on a continuous glucose-monitoring sensor implanted in a patient's skin to measure glucose concentration in the user's cells every o...
In the aftermath of Microsoft's stunning reversal of its Xbox One game licensing plans, we talked to Xbox chief product officer Marc Whitten to find out exactly what will change about Redmond's next game box this November. Whitten thankfully assuaged our primary concern right off the bat: the company's (new) used game policy extends to third-party publishers as well as Microsoft first-party games.

Though gamers won't have to put up with requirements for an internet check-in every 24 hours, some lauded features we'd heard about will not be available as a result -- at least at launch. That includes the sharing between up to ten family members, and playing disc-based games without having the disc in the One. It also means new consoles will need a patch at launch to enable this future / past scenario of disc-based console gaming.

"There are some things -- the family sharing stuff is an example -- where as we move to this system, that functionality goes away," Whitten told us. There are some bizarre added benefits of the new system, as well. One disc can act as a copy for several people, at least on the install. "If I had a physical version of my game and I went to your house, we played, and then I left with my game, you could actually buy the game instantly with no download," he told us. Since the Xbox One automatically rips disc-based games to its HDD, it essentially installs games on any box you play them on.

Why the Xbox One DRM Compromise Isn’t Good for Gamers is a post by Travis Pope from Gotta Be Mobile.Just a week after Microsoft announced that it would aggressively move to change the nature of gaming with the Xbox One, essentially pushing both publishers and users to create next generation, albeit DRM laden games, the company is completely reneging on the deal and the things that made the console unique. To recap, as part of the Xbox One console and its software, Microsoft previously announced that it would essentially treat games as digital works. Though users would still be able to buy Xbox One titles in store, whenever they brought that disc home, it would be installed on their console and treated as digital goods. Users would be able to share and lend titles to other users on their friends list as well as gift those games to other users permanently. Read: Microsoft Removes Xbox One Online & Used Game Restrictions. In exchange for these features the Xbox One would require console to games to validate once every twenty-four hours so that it could check to see if users still owned their games. In my opinion, that was a fair trade. I would get to build gaming libraries with my friends and family no matter where they were in the world and pool our resources to buy the latest titles to share. I’d be able to buy those titles on day one from the comfort of my home and essentially get rid of the disc, or at least not have to use it as the game would be installed. With today’s announcements that sharing will work the same as it does on the Xbox 360, that’s all in the air. Instead, we’ll be treated to the same half-step that the company took with the Xbox 360’s approach to digital games. Users will likely continue buying games from GameStop and reselling them while Games on Demand titles will be an afterthought. Even after users have installed games to their hard drives, they will be required to put that disc inside their Xbox One to play the game. Even digital titles won’t be allowed to be shared. Another casualty of this will be the enhanced worlds that Microsoft spent most of its time at the Electronic Entertainment Expo. As game developers will not have to program for users who are offline, it’s likely that we’ll see worlds that aren’t nearly as great as the ones Microsoft showed. Read: Microsoft Xbox One vs. Sony PlayStation. There won’t even be any sharing of games. Period. No matter if it’s digital or otherwise. No cloud sharing, and possibly no ability to play your titles from any Xbox. So at the end of this, after all the pain of negotiating deals with development studios, after all of things that would have made the Xbox One unique, Microsoft is essentially taking the “me too” approach to next generation gaming. In exchange for $500 users will be treated too much of the same experience as they can get on the PlayStation 4 for $100 less. Don’t get [...]Why the Xbox One DRM Compromise Isn’t Good for Gamers is a post by Travis Pope from Gotta Be Mobile.

Companies that prevail in patent lawsuits can't relax until the inevitable appeal is over -- just ask Motorola. Nintendo, however, can take a momentary break. A US Court of Appeals just upheld the company's win over IA Labs, declaring that the Wii Balance Board doesn't infringe on an IA Labs patent. While the ruling isn't all that vital when the accessory is now a rarity at best, it puts IA Labs on the hook for Nintendo's $236,000 attorney bill. It also sends a warning to other companies plotting similar legal assaults, although we'd still expect lawsuits when other patent holders are hitting paydirt.

Each week Joshua Fruhlinger contributes This is the Modem World, a column dedicated to exploring the culture of consumer technology.

I have a confession to make. I love /r/cringe, the sub-Reddit dedicated to those moments usually caught on video that make us feel better about our lots in life when we can watch a 30-second chunk of happenstance and walk away thinking, "I am at least one level of dork above that person."

Back in the day you were either a nerd... or not. There were no levels of dorkiness like we have today. You were into computers and Dungeons & Dragons or you weren't: that was pretty much it. You were grouped into a subculture that enjoyed all things electronic, idolized Brian Tochi, knew who Steve Wozniak was and could explain why Weird Science was not a nerd revenge film, but actually a celebration of giving up the machine for love and conformity shrouded in a Hughesian attempt to finally give the dweebs a chance to get some. Still a cool movie, though, and a righteous theme song.

Ford said a while back that it wanted more applications with support for voice control inside its vehicles, and slowly but surely the company's getting what it wished for. Just as Spotify did a few months ago, SiriusXM is now introducing its own app for the SYNC AppLink ecosystem, giving drivers access to the internet radio service right from their Ford's in-dash system. This also includes features like voice commands and steering wheel controls, as well as access to SiriusXM On Demand and MySXM. As part of the deal with the Satellite Radio company, the American car maker announced that customers purchasing one of those SYNC AppLink-ready autos will get a six-month subscription to the All Access Package -- which is usually $199 per year and has more than 160 channels to choose from.

Nokia keeps slipping out clues as to what we might expect from its Zoom Reinvented event: following the RM-877's appearance at the FCC, an RM-875 device has also popped up at the US agency. This new hardware looks like an international variant of the RM-877, and thus a second take on what we believe is the EOS. The RM-875 sheds its sibling's 1,700MHz HSPA+ data and switches the LTE to more exotic 850MHz, 1,800MHz, 2,100MHz and 2,500MHz frequencies, but it's otherwise a near perfect match in terms of dimensions and antenna layouts. The camera grip accessory and wireless charging cover persist, too. As such, it's quite possible that whatever Nokia unveils on July 11th will ship worldwide -- let's just hope it ships quickly.

Why You Shouldn’t Wait for the Nexus 7 2 is a post by Adam Mills from Gotta Be Mobile. In the next few weeks, Google is expected to make an announcement that it was expected to make at Google I/O 2013, an announcement for the heavily rumored Nexus 7 2. The device will more than likely replace the Nexus 7 on the Google Play Store as the company’s flagship 7-inch slate. And while the prospects of the Nexus 7 2 are exciting, not everyone should be waiting for the new Nexus 7 to arrive. In May, Google took the stage in San Francisco at its annual developers conference and made some announcements. However, those announcements pertained to many of the company’s current services, rather than new brand new products. Google did announce the Samsung Galaxy S4 Nexus at Google I/O, but the Galaxy S4 isn’t a new device. Read: Why You Should Wait for the Nexus 7 2. The company skipped out on two of the big announcements that seemed like distinct possibilities: Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and a new Nexus 7 2 tablet. However, as we have learned in the weeks since, these products were just vapor, they appear to be very real. Android 4.3 has been rumored for release a few weeks after the arrival of the Samsung Galaxy S4 Nexus and it could be that it arrives alongside the Nexus 7 2 which is rumored for a launch in July, just like its predecessor, the Nexus 7. Backing up the notion of a launch is the fact that an Asus-made tablet passed through the FCC with all signs pointing to it being a Nexus tablet. Seriously, the filing stated in plain English that the device would be marketed as a Nexus device. So, it’s pretty clear that Google and Asus have something up their sleeves for the weeks ahead and it’s looking like it’s going to be a new Nexus 7, presumably called the Nexus 7 2 or Nexus 7 HD. We’ve already discussed why consumers might want to wait for the Nexus 7 2 and now, it’s time to take a look at the flip side and look at some reasons why consumers might not want to wait for the Nexus 7 2 to arrive. Why You Shouldn’t Wait for the Nexus 7 2 Minor Update For some, the Nexus 7 2 will seem like a major update. It’s said to have a Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor. It’s thought to have a 1080p display. It’s also rumored to have a 5MP rear camera on board, something that the Nexus 7 did not have. However, for most users, the Nexus 7 2 is looking like an average update. From the FCC filing, it doesn’t appear to posses any major design changes from the original Nexus 7. For many, design is a big thing and the Nexus 7 design while good, simply isn’t as good as the metal iPad mini. The original Nexus 7 has a quad-core processor as well in the form of the Tegra 3 which will be enough horsepower for most people and the [...]Why You Shouldn’t Wait for the Nexus 7 2 is a post by Adam Mills from Gotta Be Mobile.

Described by the company as, "a tool for tuning into your surroundings," the service pulls updates from Twitter and Facebook and categorizes offers around themes such as restaurants and shopping. Spindle also includes a social element, with the ability to share check-ins through Facebook and Twitter. The service is currently limited to 11 cities, which includes New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago, but according to the company, "By joining forces with Twitter, we can do so much more to help you find interesting, timely, and useful information about what's happening around you." As sad news to current users of Spindle, however, the service will shut down effective today, as the team prepares for its transition to the Twitter team in San Francisco. For a peek at what Spindle entails, just hop the break. Perhaps we'll see a resurrection in short order?

Microsoft has backtracked on how the Xbox One will handle used games and offline play, following weeks of backlash. An update on Microsoft’s news site lists the following changes: Xbox One games will not require an Internet connection every 24 hours just to play offline. A one-time Internet connection will be required during system set-up, but that’s it. Games on disc may be lent, resold, given away and rented, just as Xbox 360 discs are today. Downloaded games will work without an Internet connection. There will be no regional restrictions. The story was first reported by Patrick Klepek, a well-connected reporter at Giant Bomb. A post by Don Mattrick, President of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business confirmed the news shortly after. “While we believe that the majority of people will play games online and access the cloud for both games and entertainment, we will give consumers the choice of both physical and digital content,” Mattrick wrote. “We have listened and we have heard loud and clear from your feedback that you want the best of both worlds.” Mattrick did say that some of the features Microsoft had announced for the Xbox One will have to be taken away: Games on disc will have to be in the tray to play them. Previously, Microsoft had said that games on disc would install automatically, at which point the disc would not be necessary. Users will not be able to share downloaded games with each other. Under the original plan, users would be able to pick any nine people to share their game libraries with. This would have allowed two people on separate consoles to play a single copy of the game together. As I’ve written before, Microsoft was trying to accelerate the demise of the disc by effectively making the physical copy worthless. This would have provided a couple of benefits, as listed above, and it would have given Microsoft greater control over its own games market and pricing. But it also would have taken power away from consumers to lend, trade, sell and

Microsoft Removes Xbox One Online & Used Game Restrictions is a post by Shawn Ingram from Gotta Be Mobile.Today Microsoft announced that it will lift some of the DRM restrictions of the Xbox One that angered many gamers in the past few weeks. In a blog post the head of the Xbox division Don Mattrick wrote that Microsoft won’t require an online connection for the Xbox One. Gamers will have to connect their console to the Internet once when they first set it up, but after that it will no longer require an Internet connection. There is no more “24 hour connection requirement,” the console will work just like the Xbox 360 when not connected to the web. Read: Microsoft Shows Off 13 Exclusive Xbox One Games Microsoft will also let gamers buy and sell used games or lend disc-based games to their friends without restriction. Publishers no longer have the option to restrict a gamer’s option to sell a game back to GameStop or another retailer. The change also lifts the restriction that let gamers only lend a game to a friend once for however long that own the game. The Xbox one will play disc-based and downloaded games regardless of the user’s Internet connection. That means gamers can take their console wherever they want, including nuclear submarines and play any game they currently own a copy of. Microsoft will also make the Xbox One region unlocked, so gamers can play any Xbox One game on any console regardless of country of origin. That’s great news for travelers and gamers who like to import games. The new policies come with a few downsides, however. With the new DRM policies gamers can’t share downloaded Xbox One games. There is no word on how this will effect the announced family sharing feature, though it seems that feature is no more. Microsoft’s new policies will also mean that to play a disc-based game that’s installed on the Xbox One hard drive, gamers have to insert the disc into the console, like they have to on the Xbox 360. That makes the gaming slightly less convenient and a bit less like Steam, though gamers who want the convenience will have the option to download any Xbox One game the day it arrives in stores.Microsoft Removes Xbox One Online & Used Game Restrictions is a post by Shawn Ingram from Gotta Be Mobile.

They've announced a "definitive merger agreement" where MakerBot would converge with a subsdiary of Stratasys in a stock-for-stock transaction. After selling more than 22,000 3D printers since its inception in 2009, MakerBot is seen as a leader and pioneer in the 3D printing space, and about 11,000 of those sales were due to the Replicator 2 alone. MakerBot will operate as a separate entity with its own branding and marketing as part of the deal, and will provide an affordable 3D printing market for Stratasys. If all goes well with the regulators, it should be done by the third quarter of 2013.

Technology pundits have long speculated that, one day, Microsoft would buy its way into manufacturing of its own mobile phones. Apparently that day came a lot closer to fruition than people had thought.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Microsoft was in “advanced talks” to acquire Finnish smartphone manufacturer Nokia before talks recently broke down. Nokia, which has a market valuation of $14 billion, would be a fairly easy pill for the cash-loaded Microsoft to swallow. WSJ reports that Microsoft could have used some of its $66 billion in offshore accounts to acquire Nokia before talks stalled.
Nokia has had an exclusive partnership with Microsoft to use the software giant’s Windows Phone operating system since February 2011. Nokia produces a series of smartphones uses Microsoft’s mobile operating system dubbed “Lumia” with the most recent releases occurring this spring with the Nokia Lumia 925 and Lumia 928.

It made perfect sense for both companies -- one a struggling pioneer of the mobile industry and the other a struggling stalwart from the first wave of smartphones. According to the Wall Street Journal's sources, the two were actually quite close to striking a deal and were having "advanced talks" in London as recently as this month. But, according to the all-too-familiar "people familiar with the matter," those talks have broken down. Those same sources say that it was Microsoft that eventually walked away from the table over concerns about Nokia's asking price, especially in light of its continued failure to put a significant dent in Apple and Samsung's market dominance. Though it seems like dreams of a Microsoft-Nokia merger are dead for the moment, don't expect the disagreement to severely impact the duo's partnership. Nokia is still reliant on Microsoft's help to standout in the market and Microsoft needs the Finnish manufacturer to keep pumping out flagship-quality handsets with Windows Phone on them.

Microsoft's next game console, the Xbox One, is perhaps best known for its complex used game system and once-per-24-hour online check-in requirement. Today, it looks like Microsoft is rolling back those policies according to a report at Giant Bomb, and the company took to its Xbox blog to explain. "As a result of feedback from the Xbox community, we have changed certain policies for Xbox One reflected in this blog," the page reads. The "in this blog" portion of that text links out to a new, still not live page on the Xbox news site with a URL reading, "update."

(NEW YORK) — Los Angeles’ school system, the second largest in the country, is ordering iPads for all its students, handing Apple a major success in its quest to make the tablet computer a replacement for textbooks. The Los Angeles Board of Education on Tuesday approved the purchase of $30 million worth of iPads as the first part of a multi-year commitment. It found that the iPad was the least expensive option that met its specifications. Apple says the initial order is for more than 31,000 iPads. The Los Angeles Unified School District has more than 640,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The textbooks will be delivered through an application from Pearson, a major publisher.

Microsoft May Reverse Xbox One DRM Policies is a post by Shawn Ingram from Gotta Be Mobile.A report from Giant Bomb claims that after the fallout surrounding the Xbox One Microsoft may completely reverse its DRM policies. The report claims that Microsoft will issue a statement today “amounts to a complete reversal on its DRM policies for Xbox One.” Microsoft’s current Xbox One DRM policies include an always-on Internet connection that authenticates the console every 24 hours, publisher restrictions on used games and region locked games. The alleged reversal would make the Xbox One function much more like the Xbox 360. Microsoft would reportedly no longer require an Internet connection for the Xbox One, and the console wouldn’t check in with Microsoft’s servers every 24 hours. In fact, the only time gamers would have to connect their console online would be when they first set it up. Update: Microsoft updated the Top Questions page for the Xbox One adding “As a result of feedback from the Xbox community, we have changed certain policies for Xbox One.” It appears the DRM will change, but Microsoft hasn’t yet announced what will change. New policies for the Xbox One would also lets gamers buy and sell used games and lend their games to friends with no restrictions. Previous plans let publishers set restrictions on used games, only let gamers lend each game they own once. The new policies would also apply to downloaded games, letting games play them whether they’re online or offline. Giant Bomb also says that “All game discs will work on Xbox One as they do on Xbox 360,” though it’s not clear if that means gamers can still play games without the disc or not. Microsoft’s current policies would let gamers install a game once then play it from the hard drive without the disc. On the Xbox 360, however, gamers need to insert the disc to play any game they installed on the hard drive. If the policy change is true, Microsoft will better compete with the PlayStation 4 this holiday. While Sony’s console is more powerful on paper, Microsoft will use Azure and its cloud infrastructure to help boost the power of the Xbox One. Microsoft also showed and impressive number of great-looking Xbox One exclusives at E3 that may convince a few gamers to come back to Microsoft instead of buying a PlayStation 4. Assuming the rumored new policies in fact are less restrictive.Microsoft May Reverse Xbox One DRM Policies is a post by Shawn Ingram from Gotta Be Mobile.

This may be the best-looking breathalyzer ever created. (Credit: Tokyoflash) You've just created a combination watch and breathalyzer. You're sitting around, trying to decide what to name it. Aha, you think, let's call it the Intoxicated Watch. That will get the point across. The Kisai Intoxicated Watch has just made its debut on Tokyoflash, where it's selling for a limited time at a $99 launch price. The watch description says the negative-space time display is easy to read, no matter how intoxicated you are. In case you're not sure what level of drunk you've achieved, the watch has a built-in breathalyzer. You open the sensor cap, push a button, and blow into it for 5 seconds. A display on the watch gives your blood alcohol content level. If you blow a 0.61 percent or above, the display registers as red to indicate you've had too much. A green display means your BAC is low. A yellow display indicates a BAC between 0.41 and 0.60 percent. Related stories Fund this: Breathometer turns your smartphone into a breathalyzer ...

When GameStick put its $79 game console on Kickstarter last January, the projected April delivery date seemed a little too good to be true. Turns out, it was. The diminutive gaming system, which connects directly to a television’s HDMI input and plays Android-based games, will now ship to Kickstarter backers in mid-August. The retail version will be available some time after that. PlayJam, the company behind GameStick, said the user interface took longer to prepare than hoped, partly because the final version of the hardware is slightly different from the development version. Despite the holdup, PlayJam still wants to give its “Designed by Me” backers–50 people who paid $300 for access to an early prototype–a chance to give their feedback. “In the spirit of Kickstarter it would be disingenuous of us to cut out this process and not give those backers the opportunity to comment on and help perfect the UI prior to completion,” a post on the company’s Kickstarter page says. It’s understandable why PlayJam would want to put some extra polish on its system before launch. When GameStick’s biggest rival, Ouya, shipped its Kickstarter edition console a couple months back, some reviewers criticized it for problems with both the hardware and the software. Although Ouya deserves credit for actually shipping a Kickstarter project on time, it might have benefited from a little more refinement before its public debut. (Ouya says that it’s worked out the kinks for the retail version, which launches on June 25.) I do wish GameStick had offered a more realistic estimate to begin with, rather than projecting the same ship date as Ouya and coming nowhere close. Maybe the rule for Kickstarter creators should be to take whatever delivery estimate they’ve come up with, and add a few months cushion.

With Microsoft's Build developer conference kicking off in just a week, we're frankly surprised the company is choosing to release any news ahead of time. Today, though, the firm posted a video showing some changes to Office Web apps. In particular, the preview indicates that these various apps will now support real-time co-authoring, with multiple users making changes at once (yep, just like Google Docs). That's a nice, long-awaited improvement over the current setup, in which multiple users can make changes, but not alongside one another. According to Microsoft, this set of features will roll out over "the next several months." For now, we've got the video preview embedded after the break. And don't be put off by the 14-minute length; the demo doesn't actually begin until five and a half minutes in.

Pong was the first ever videogame that reached the mass market. For the first time in history, the concept of a "video game" was brought into the family home, thanks to the Atari 2600 - so it's only right that we pay a little homage to this historical gem. Now, you can re-live that (admittedly somewhat boring gameplay) using an Arduino and some common components.Continue reading the articleRead full post: How To Recreate The Classic Pong Game Using Arduino

What's better than an Engadget reader meetup? An Engadget and gdgt reader meetup! That's right, folks, Engadget + gdgt Live is a mere five days away, and you can (and should) come join us. Doors open on June 24 at 6pm at 82Mercer in Manhattan (the physical address is 76 Mercer Street). The best part: tickets are free and you can get 'em right here. Those who come out will get to kick it in mobile lounges packed with the latest tech from from Samsung and Sony. And, we'll have many more companies showing off their wares, including Qualcomm, Toshiba, Slingbox and Goji, the smart lock company that won our Startup Contest. Plus, there will be on-stage chats with Sony about 4K, Samsung about its Galaxy devices and an editors roundtable with journalists from around the web talking the latest tech news.

We'll also be giving away tons of gear, but you'll have to attend to find out how to grab the schwag for yourself -- rest assured, it'll be worth your while. If free stuff won't entice you (unlikely, we know), then the prospect of an evening with a gaggle of Engadget editors and thousands of other like-minded gadget-geeks should do the trick. Still not enough? We'll be capping off the night with live musical performances by Sound of Contact (featuring Phil Collins' son Simon) and Vernon Reid (Living Colour founder). So, come on out, folks. You'll be glad you did.
