Cornell Hillel’s Tanner Prize will honor Seth ‘Yossi’ Siegel ’74, J.D. ’78 in June Cornell Hillel's Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the awarding of the 2013 Tanner Prize to Seth ‘Yossi’ Siegel ’74, J.D. ‘78. The Prize is awarded annually to an individual, couple, family or other entity to recognize long-time contributions to the both Jewish people and to Cornell University. For his efforts towards enhancing Jewish life at Cornell and his involvement in various areas of the University, Yossi amply satisfies both conditions for the Prize. The Prize will be presented on Tuesday, June 18 in New York City at a lunch at The Cornell Club of New York. Cornell Board of Trustees Chairman Emeritus Harold Tanner '52 will present the Prize bearing his name. “Yossi Siegel brings incredible energy, intelligence and initiative to every aspect of his multifaceted community service,” said Cornell President David J. Skorton. “For Cornell Hillel, for the ILR School, and for local and national Jewish organizations, he is a model of dedicated leadership.” The Tanner Prize, established by Cornell Hillel's Board of Trustees in 2004, is awarded annually to a person, couple, family or other entity making significant contributions to Jewish life and to Cornell, including, but not necessarily limited to, Cornell Hillel. Susan H. Murphy, Vice President for Student and Academic Services commented, “Yossi Siegel has been a true leader for Cornell and Cornell Hillel. His tenure as Hillel’s Board Chair was critical to Cornell Hillel’s growth and reach. He is a most deserving recipient.” “Harold Tanner, for whom the Tanner Prize is named, has proudly served Cornell University and the worldwide Jewish community. He has long been a role model for me in the way one should live his life,” said Siegel. “To be awarded a prize bearing his name while being recognized for my service to both the University and the Jewish community is an honor I cherish today and will cherish long into the future. I only hope that I can serve as a model for students and grads so that they, too, will want to serve both of these communities.” Prior Tanner Prize recipients include: Barbara Friedman '59, David '73 and Abby Joseph Cohen '73, Andrew Tisch '71, Irwin '54 and Joan Jacobs '54 and their son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Jerri-Ann Jacobs P’08, Irene B. Rosenfeld '75, M.S. '77, Ph.D. '80 and Allison Rosenfeld '08, Robert J. Katz '69, and Dr. Susan Murphy ’74 Ph.D. ’94. Seth M. Siegel ’74, J.D. ’78, known widely as ‘Yossi’ has devoted a large part of his adult life in service to both Cornell University and the Jewish people. At Cornell, Yossi has, among other roles, served on the Cornell Council (now in his second term) and on the Advisory Board of the ILR School. In 2010, he was the recipient of the Alpern Prize, awarded annually to an outstanding alumnus of the ILR School. Yossi has been a visionary leader for Jewish life at Cornell, serving on the Cornell Hillel Board for 13 years and helping to dramatically grow the organization. He served as the Chair of the Cornell Hillel Board of Trustees from 2003-2006. Within the Jewish community, Yossi serves on the National Board of AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee), is now in the 26th year of his Board service to the Heschel School, and has been an advisor to countless Jewish organizations. Yossi is also a serial entrepreneur, having started successful business in fields as diverse as branding, finance, and cellular intellectual property. He and his wife, Rachel Ringler, have three children Alana ’05, Sam, and Talia ‘13.
The Ithaca Area Jewish community gathered for a special Celebration of Innovation on Sunday, April 21, 2013. More than 150 people attended the afternoon event that was open to the public and held at Cornell University’s Bio-technology Building Auditorium. It celebrated the innovative spirit of Israel as the community learned first-hand of Israel's contribution to the pacesetting partnership between the City of New York, the Technion—Israel Institute of Technology, and Cornell University. The event was organized by the Ithaca Area United Jewish Community’s (IAUJC) volunteer Program Chair, Marjorie Hoffman, as a way to foster awareness of Israel today, bring people together and increase a sense of community. It was an opportunity to focus on Israel in an informative and exciting way—especially when the daily headlines often bring news of strife there. The program included a welcome from IAUJC Co-Chair, Dr. Marcia Zax, who recognized five IAUJC out-going Board members with awards and deep appreciation for their service. Recognized were: Michael Faber, Linda Mandel, Rita Mellon, Jeffrey Silber and Esther Racoosin. Participants in the program included Cornell Provost, Kent Fuchs as moderator, Professor Craig Gotsman, Director of the Technion-Cornell Innovation Institute, Cornell Professor of Electrical Engineering Michal Lipson, who is an alumna with three degrees from the Technion and recent winner of the MacArthur Foundation’s ‘genius award’, and Professor Yoram Baram, inventor extraordinaire from the Technion. Provost Fuchs introduced Cornell NYC Tech as a new graduate school with an academic culture for highly entrepreneurial technologists. It includes the new Technion-Cornell Innovation Institute at its core. Provost Fuchs explained how Cornell’s partnership with the Technion came about. With its permanent campus to be located on Roosevelt Island in New York City, it will position Cornell NYC Tech alumni, faculty, and students at the center of 21st century economic and societal growth. Provost Fuchs gave the audience a heads-up that exciting news would be forthcoming from NYC the following day. The announcement that Joan and Irwin Jacobs had made a $133 million gift to name the Institute the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Innovation Institute (JTCII), was made the following day at New York City Hall by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Cornell’s President David Skorton and Technion President Peretz Lavie. The Jacob’s gift will support joint activities between Cornell and the Technion, including dual master’s degree programs, faculty, graduate students and industry interactions. Dr. Irwin Jacobs is the Founding Chairman and CEO Emeritus of Qualcomm, and he and his wife are Cornell alumni. Technion Professor Craig Gotsman, Director of the JTCII, then explained Israel’s growing reputation as a 'start-up nation' and described its evolution from an agrarian economy into a country that is second only to the U.S. in the number of companies listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange. Cornell’s Prof. Lipson then shared with the audience her reflections on how her education in Israel as a student of physics at the Technion, allowed her to become a leader in her field of innovative research addressing the potential power of light and nanotechnology. Prof. Gotsman then introduced his colleague, Prof. Yoram Baram who wowed the audience with his invention of a medical device that has the potential to change the world for millions. His electronic goggles can be worn by patients to overcome the effects of Parkinson’s disease on their ability to walk. Inspired by the movie The Awakening, Baram shared remarkable videos of his research that show patients, when aided by the device, suddenly able to walk with a normal gait. There was a Q&A session and after the presentation the audience was invited to join the panelists in a reception with a Middle Eastern spread. The IAUJC’s Dr. Zax, also organized a session with the panelists who met with Cornell students interested in entrepreneurial careers to advise them on career and job prospects. This event highlighted how a small community is connected to a world-class project that stretches from Ithaca to NYC to Israel and beyond. The program was sponsored by the IAUJC with co-sponsorship by TAMID of Cornell Hillel, Temple Beth El, and Tompkins Trust Company.

Above, A Date in Cornell Basketball History. Cornell's regular season and postseason media guides for Cornell's three-time NCAA Tournament participant and defending Ivy League championship teams of 2008, 2009 and 2010. The Ivy League teams ceased publication of hardcopy regular season media guides during the 2009-2010 season. Below, news and notes for Thursday...Reviewing the Brooklyn Nets' season, TheBrooklynGame.com writes, "The Summer League also brought us Swamp People extra Adam Morrison scoring the first-ever points for an incarnation of the Brooklyn Nets and the only 7-footer doofier than Brook Lopez, Cornell grad Jeff Foote." Foote did not play with his professional club, Zalgiris' (Lithuania) opening win in the quarterfinals last night against Novgorod (Russia) in the Eastern Europe VTB League Playoffs. Zalgiris, which now leads the series 1-0, picked up a 75-63 win. Foote will likely miss the remainder of the season with back pains.Below, continuing coverage of Errick Peck's enrollment at Purdue following his graduation from Cornell. Under Ivy League rules, Peck is not eligible to play in the Ivy League as a graduate student. Listen to an ESPN Radio podcast interview of Errick Peck. On Errick Peck, the Ft. Wayne Journal writes:Errick Peck has made a decision, and the former Indianapolis Cathedral standout and high school teammate of former Boilermaker Kelsey Barlow will play his final season of college basketball at Purdue. The 6-foot-6 forward will receive his undergraduate degree from Cornell on May 26 after spending four years at the Ivy League school. He missed the 2011-2012 season with a knee injury and has one season of college eligibility remaining. Because he will receive his bachelor’s degree in four years, the NCAA will allow Peck to play one more season as a graduate student at another university. Peck visited Purdue and Xavier, selecting the Boilermakers on Wednesday. Peck is a near-perfect fit for the Boilermakers’ 2013-2014 roster. He will give Matt Painter a fifth-year player on a roster that until Wednesday had two scholarship seniors and no scholarship juniors. Everyone else on the 2013-2014 roster will have freshman or sophomore athletic eligibility. Peck will add a mature voice and a dedicated approach to the game. And, he likes to play defense, which will get him on the floor in Painter’s world. West Lafayette High School’s David Wood, a former Purdue assistant, coached Peck during the 2009 Indiana All-Star team’s sweep of Kentucky. While Peck was one of the final two selected for that All-Star team, Wood said Indiana would not have won twice without him. Wood told me Wednesday that he would take Peck on any roster at any time. Wood said Peck is a great human being and is a player “you win with.” While Peck’s 9.7 points and 4.8 rebounds averages weren’t eye-opening during Cornell’s 2012-2013 season, he was a solid player who did what he was asked. A player like that will add stability to next season’s Purdue roster. He is capable of playing small forward or power forward and is confident he can guard three different positions. Peck also said he has worked hard to improve his perimeter shot, a skill the 2013-2014 Boilermakers need. Last summer, Painter went after Julius Mays, a Marion High School product who had played at North Carolina State and Wright State and had a season of eligibility remaining after picking up his diploma at Wright State. Mays picked Kentucky instead of Purdue, and it was evident last year’s young Purdue team could have used his wise, poised leadership. This time, Painter got his “voice of reason” in Pack, a guy who will help the Boilermakers in practice, during games and in the locker room. If you are a Purdue basketball fan, you should be excited about Errick Peck’s decision to attend Purdue. As David Wood says, Peck is a guy “you win with. The Ft. Wayne Journal writes:The guy you win with. That’s the way 2009 Indiana All-Star boys basketball team coach David Wood of West Lafayette describes Errick Peck, a strong 6-foot-6 forward who played three seasons at Ivy League member Cornell and now will use his final year of athletic eligibility at Purdue. Peck, an Indianapolis Cathedral graduate who led Indiana to a two-game sweep of Kentucky in 2009, is taking second-semester final examinations this week at Cornell and will receive his undergraduate degr......
