Pick Of The Week

Mar 25 11:36am seattlepi.com: Dining
Washington Wine Month is getting close to wrapping up, and I have been having fun finding great wines from this state for my pick of the week. I have also been focusing on Washington wines in my You Tube episodes during March. It was during one of my latest episodes that I discovered a wine that blew me away. Not only because it is so well made, but the price was, well, ridonculous! 2014 Isenhower Cellars “Wild Thyme” Red (Columbia Valley, WA)… $36. The Isenhowers (husband and wife pharmacists), moved from Colorado to Walla Walla in 1998 to fulfill their wine making dreams. In 1999 they did their first crush...

3 up, 3 down: Who's impressing at Mariners spring training?

Soltado Tequila: Mexico, Packing Heat

Mar 20 10:36pm seattlepi.com: Dining
I was sent a sample bottle of Soltado Tequila about four months ago and actually laughed out loud when I opened the box. The notion of a true añejo Tequila (this stuff spends twenty-eight months in oak barrels, folks!) infused with Serrano peppers and Mexican canela (cinnamon) led logically to two questions: 1) Why mess with a properly-aged añejo? and 2) Why, period? Soltado is a Mexican brand that’s produced by all 80 of the agave farmers in Juanacatlán, a town in the midlands of the tequila-producing state of Jalisco. What possible marketing rationale could these presumably sane people have for doing this;  for making a Tequila that would seem, at least,...

That’s it. That and anything else made along those dumbed-down lines. I’ve had people who took this to mean that I just don’t like Pilsners; some even extrapolated that to include all Lagers…which is crap. Jury convicts sports agent, trainer in Cuban smuggling case

Mar 15 4:37pm seattlepi.com: Seattle Mariners & Baseball News
MIAMI (AP) — A Miami jury on Wednesday convicted a Florida sports agent and a baseball trainer on charges they smuggled Cuban baseball players to the U.S. in search of big profits from professional free agent contracts. The verdict came after jurors heard about six weeks of testimony in the trial of Bartolo Hernandez and Julio Estrada, who were indicted on conspiracy and alien smuggling charges for an operation that began in 2009 and involved a number of high-profile Major League Baseball players. Trial evidence showed an existing Cuban smuggling operation that brought people from the communist-run island to Mexico became the platform in 2009 for the much more lucrative trade in elite ballplayers. In one of the trial's memorable moments, Chicago White Sox star Jose Abreu testified that he ate a piece of his phony Haitian passport while flying to the U.S. in 2013 because he feared repercussions if he landed in Miami with a fake document.
